SHENZHEN, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- Customs in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen have seized the carapaces of 246 endangered hawksbill turtles.

The shells were found in the luggage of a passenger at the Futian port at around 9 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Shenzhen customs.

They weigh 9 kilograms, with each 10 to 20 centimeters long and 3 millimeters thick.

The world population of hawksbill turtles has rapidly shrunk due to hunting, as their shells are popular materials for jewelry and other accessories.

The species is listed as endangered by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
