MADRID, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Spanish authorities are to increase the use of mobile obstacles in places where large numbers of people are concentrated to prevent vehicle attacks, the likes of which Barcelona experienced last week, from happening again.

They also agreed to study other measures, such as installing permanent obstacles and pedestrianizing streets in an attempt to stop a repeat of last Thursday's terrorist attack which claimed 13 lives on Las Ramblas street when a van drove into a crowd of people.

The measures were announced at a press conference by Barcelona Mayor Ada Colou, along with government delegate in Catalonia Enric Millo and regional interior minister, Joaquim Forn.

As well as studying measures to make it impossible to repeat last week's atrocity, work will also be undertaken to improve the quality and definition of video cameras in the streets, as well as the creation of a working group to evaluate possible risks and the creation of a new center for emergency management.

Several cities in Spain have also begun to take measures to make it impossible to drive vehicles into areas where large numbers of people are gathered, with Madrid City Hall using large concrete plant pots to make it impossible to pass onto pedestrianized streets in the center of the capital.
