RIGA, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Latvia will buy Stinger portable air defense systems from the Danish armed forces, Latvian Defense Minister Raimonds Bergmanis told the Latvian public television on Monday.
Bergmanis did not reveal how many Stingers Latvia will buy or what they will cost. He noted that the price "is not too high" and the number of the missiles is "big enough".
The purchase of Stinger missiles "is very important, as our armed forces are developing", the minister said.
"We'll be able to defend our land much more effectively if such a necessity arises," he said, adding that the air defense systems will be deployed all over the country.
The Stingers will be delivered to Latvia this year or early next year, according to Bergmanis.
