ACCRA, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Ghana has mobilized relief items valued at one million U.S. dollars for victims of the flood and mudslide disaster in Sierra Leone, the government announced on Friday.
The items, comprising food, medicines, clothing and logistics for temporary shelter, are to be airlifted to the West African country, the Ministry of Information said in a statement copied to Xinhua.
According to the statement, Ghana's Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia is also expected to leave for Sierra Leone on Saturday to commiserate with the Sierra Leoneans.
Nearly 400 people are confirmed dead and hundreds of others missing following devastating mudslide and floods in Sierra Leone's capital, Freetown.
Heavy rain in the early hours of Monday was reported to have caused the side of a hill to collapse, trapping hundreds of people in the hilltop town of Regent on the outskirts of Freetown, a coastal city with a population of about 1.2 million.
