BARCELONA, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said Friday that the central government and Catalonia's government should work together "as a team" to fight terrorism and arrest the terrorists as soon as possible.
The prime minister made the remarks at a joint press conference with President of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, a day after twin terror attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils, that killed 14 and injured around 130, 18 of whom are in serious condition.
For his part, Puigdemont said "We got up troubled today, but also determined to win the fight against terrorism with the best weapon that we have -- solidarity, coexistence, freedom and respect." .
Highlighting the "admirable" response of Spanish society, who returned to their normal life despite the tragic incident, Puigdemont said the action sent a message of "calm, confidence and hope."
Both leaders spoke of their appreciation for the work carried out by security forces.
Thirteen people were killed Thursday afternoon in the popular Las Ramblas area of Barcelona when a white van zigzagged at high speed down the busy avenue thronged with tourists, knocking down pedestrians.
On Thursday night, the 14th victim, a woman, was stabbed and later died at hospital on Friday, when five people jumped out of a car and began attacking people at random on the seaside promenade in Cambrils, a town south of Barcelona. Spanish police shot all five attackers dead.
