NAIROBI, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Kenyan government on Wednesday finally cleared Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC) senior official to travel to the United States after she had been blocked from boarding a flight at the airport.

IEBC Commissioner Dr. Roselyn Akombe was on Tuesday night delayed from travelling to New York at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) after she failed to produce clearance from Head of Public Service.

However, the electoral commission confirmed the delay on Wednesday, saying the official is travelling to the U.S. for an official meeting.

"Dr Akombe, who is traveling to U.S. for an official meeting, was delayed at JKIA by officials who have since apologized. She returns on Sunday," IEBC said on Wednesday.

The clearance comes amid reports that the IEBC commissioner who had been busy conducting the just concluded general elections whose presidential results have been disputed by the Opposition, was removed from a plane and blocked from travelling to the United States in an unclear circumstances.

IEBC officials said the airport officials were unaware that Akombe is an independent commissioner and demanded clearance. She thus missed her flight and was rescheduled to leave on Wednesday morning.
