NEW DELHI, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- At least four persons have been killed and more than 15 others injured in a road accident in the western Indian state of Rajasthan, police said Tuesday.

"The accident occurred when two vehicles collided on the Chittorgarh-Udaipur highway after the driver of one vehicle lost control," a senior police official said.

While four persons died on the spot, those injured were rushed to a nearby hospital by local residents. "Some of the injured are said to be critical," the official said.

Most of the victims were travelling in one vehicle and were on a pilgrimage from their native Jhalawar district.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official said, adding that the driver of one vehicle fled the spot after the accident while the other sustained injuries.

India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents occur mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
