TOKYO, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks lost ground Monday as geopolitical concerns and the yen's spike against the U.S. dollar made for a dour market mood in the opening minutes of trade.
As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 223.18 points, or 1.13 percent, from Thursday to 19,506.56.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 18.10 points, or 1.12 percent, to 1,599.15.
Iron and steel, bank and precision instrument-linked issues comprised those that declined the most in early trade.
Markets here were closed on Friday for a national holiday.
