LUSAKA, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Zambian President Edgar Lungu on Wednesday congratulated his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame over his re-election in last week's elections.
Lungu said Kagame's re-election was a demonstration of the confidence the people of Rwanda had in his leadership and vision for his country.
Zambia looked forward to continued cooperation with the Rwandan government in addressing issues of mutual interest at bilateral and multilateral levels, he added, according to a statement released by his office.
The Zambian leader said his government was keen to enhancing cooperation between the two countries in key sectors for their mutual benefit as well as for the advancement of the regional and African developmental agendas.
Kagame, 59, swept to a landslide victory in Rwanda's presidential election, securing a third term in office and extending his 17 years in power.
The former guerrilla leader polled 98.79 percent of the vote, with over 6.6 million votes, according to the final results released by Rwandan National Electoral Commission (NEC) Wednesday.
