JERUSALEM, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip hit Israeli territory on Tuesday night, a military spokesperson said in a statement.
"A projectile fired at southern Israel hit an open area in the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council," the statement read.
Sirens were heard in the region but no injuries or damage have been reported.
The spokesperson said that forces are searching the area to find remnants of the rocket.
No organization immediately assumed responsibility for the fire.
Sporadic rocket fire from the Gaza Strip has been hitting southern Israel since Israel concluded a 51-day bloody military campaign in Gaza Strip in the summer of 2014.
The rocket fire usually caused no injuries or damage, and Israel usually retaliates by attacking Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip.
