International exercise BALTRON to take place in Baltic Sea

VILNIUS, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Annual naval exercise BALTRON Squadron Exercise 17/2 will take place on Aug.7 -11 in Lithuanian territorial waters and exceptional economic zone in the Baltic Sea, local news agency Elta reported on Monday.

The maneuvers will involve military units of Lithuania, Latvia and Germany, according to the report.

The phase of the exercise in the Baltic Sea will hone crew skills such as ship manoeuvring, communication procedures, artillery firing and defence from surface targets, search and rescue, defence from asymmetric threat. Mine-hunting ships will carry out common mine countermeasures procedures.

According to local media, Lithuania's Navy will be represented by staff and support vessel Jotvingis, mine-hunters Suduvis and Kursis, patrol vessels Aukstaitis and Selis, search-and-rescue ship Sakiai and a port boat, as well as a naval team of submarine actions.

Latvia's Navy will be represented by support vessel Varonis and mine-hunter Rusins, while mine-hunter Pegnitz will take part on behalf of Germany's naval forces, local media reported.

The international exercise is led by Commander Tomas Skurdenis of the Lithuanian Navy.
