Public transport becomes major choice for Dubai citizens

DUBAI, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Public transport in Dubai carried a total of 275.772 million passengers in the first half of 2017, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai said Saturday.

Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the RTA, said in a statement that an average of 1.507 million people chose the public transport every day in the first half of this year.

Public transport service include the driverless Dubai metro, Dubai tram, public buses, marine transit modes of various kinds and taxicabs, according to the statement.

Dubai metro is the top choice for Dubai citizens, as it accounted for 36.4 percent of the total ridership, followed by taxis with 31.7 percent and public buses with 28 percent.

Earlier in June, RTA said it had signed an agreement with Germany's Volocopter company, an autonomous air vehicles manufacturer, to launch a trial operation of autonomous air taxis in the fourth quarter of 2017.

The emirate of Dubai has a population of around 2.5 million and has received 8.06 million tourists in the first half of year, representing a year-on-year increase of 10.6 percent.

Dubai aims to attract up to 25 million tourists by 2020, as it will be hosting the Expo 2020 from October 2020 to April 2021.
