LUSAKA, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- The Zambian government on Wednesday expressed concern over the low usage of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) among learners despite incorporating ICT in the school curriculum.

Minister of General Education Dennis Wanchinga said it was unfortunate that only 250,000 out of 4 million learners in the country have access to ICTs despite the ministry embracing it in the curriculum.

The government wanted to bring the ratio down considering that education now revolves around ICT and science, he added.

The minister, who was speaking after a tour of education facilities in Chililabombwe district on the Copperbelt province, said the government was concerned with the high number of schools operating without science laboratories and computers in the country, according to state broadcaster, the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation.

According to him, teaching without science laboratories and computers was not good for communities because global economic development was now anchored on ICTs.

The minister pledged the government's commitment to invest heavily in the development of education infrastructure and technology to ensure learners obtain quality education.
