Canadian stock market rebounces

TORONTO, Aug.1 (Xinhua) -- Canada's main stock index rebounced Tuesday due to strength of technology and telecom stocks.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's benchmark Standard & Poor's/TSX Composite Index rose 58.23 points, or 0.38 percent to close Tuesday at 15,502.10. Eight of the index's 10 main groups ended higher.

The biggest gainer were technology stocks, with BlackBerry climbing 22 cents, or 1.9 percent, to 11.91 Canadian dollars while Shopify Inc surged 15.33, or 13.3 percent to 130.22 Canadian dollars.

Telecoms also had a banner day, with TELUS progressing 72 cents, or 1.6 percent, to 45.75 Canadian dollars while BCE Inc. took on 50 cents to 59.02 Canadian dollars.

In the industrial sector, Air Canada jumped 1.92 dollars, or 9.7 percent, to 21.75 Canadian dollars while Canadian National Railways hiked 1.37 dollars, or 1.4 percent, to 99.89 Canadian dollars.

Energy stocks became the biggest losers as Suncor Energy dropped 31 cents to 40.36 Canadian dollars while Spartan Energy went south 39 cents, or 6 percent, to 6.01 Canadian dollars.

The Canadian dollar fell 0.24 cents to 79.78 U.S. cents. while oil prices dropped 96 cents to 49.21 U.S. dollars. a barrel and gold prices gained 3.70 to 1,277.10 U.S. dollars an ounce. Enditem
