NAIROBI, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Olympic javelin silver medallist Julius Yego of Kenya is aware he faces a daunting task to challenge for the medals at the World Championships, which starts in London on Aug. 4.
The 28-year-old has had the worst build up to the championships and his last performance in Monaco Diamond League a week ago saw him hurl just 74.43m and 79.36m in the two valid throws credited to his name.
"I'm grateful for what happened since performance like those wake you up. For now I am just focusing on my technique and nothing more in a bid to make sure everything will be okay in London," he said on Friday.
Indeed an ankle injury, which kept him out of competition for seven months, may have sucked the winds out of his sails, but Yego has vowed not to give up without a fight.
The Kenyan faces a litmus test in London as he comes up against Olympic champion Thomas Rohler, who has been consistently in 90-meter territory this season, Jan Zelezny and fellow Germany compatriot Johannes Vetter.
There is also the 2012 Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago, as well as the Czech Republic's Jakub Vadlejch.
Yego, who is also the Commonwealth champion, had his best throw at 87.9 meters in Nairobi earlier this month and said he is under no pressure to prove his credential.
"I have no injury worries and am improving by the day. I hope to surprise many and that is the irony of these championships," he said.
Meanwhile, former world champion Eunice Sum has said she didn't report to the pre-World Championships training camp in Nairobi due to delay in the processing of her travel documents, which also prevented her from taking part in the Monaco Diamond League.
"I have not reported to the camp since there has been confusion regarding my passport. I have not received my passport since applying for a visa to Britain. I was to run in Monaco Diamond League series but I missed it because my travel documents delayed and I haven't received the documents up to this moment," she said.
