DUBAI, July 27 (Xinhua) -- A senior official of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) said on Thursday that the UAE has donated 10 million U.S. dollars to the World Health Organization (WHO) to support its efforts in fighting cholera in Yemen, state news agency WAM reported.
The announcement was made by UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum during a meeting in Marmoum with Director-General of WHO Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
Sheikh Mohammed and Ghebreyesus discussed relations and cooperation between the UAE and WHO as well as the UAE's efforts to provide aid to people in disaster and crisis areas around the world.
The UAE vice president expressed his appreciation for WHO's efforts to enhance health conditions, combat epidemics and launch new programs to help improve people's quality of life around the world.
Ghebreyesus praised UAE's contributions to the fight against poliomyelitis worldwide and cholera epidemic in war-torn Yemen.
Since March 2015, a Saud-led coalition has been fighting Iran-backed Houthi rebels in the Arab peninsula state of Yemen. The UAE is part of the coalition of nine Arab states to support Yemen's internationally recognized government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi. Enditem
