KHARTOUM, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Sudanese Foreign Ministry summoned on Thursday Libya's Charge d'Affaires in Khartoum to protest Libya's decision to close Sudan's consulate in Kufra town.

"The ministry summoned the Charge d'Affaires in Libya's Embassy in Khartoum Ali Miftah Al-Mahrouq over the decision of the interim Libyan government in Tobruk to close Sudan's consulate in Kufra and conveyed to him the ministry's rejection of the accusations and claims against the general consulate in Kufra," Sudan's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Sudan's consulate in Kufra has been respected and appreciated by all leaders and people of the area since its establishment, as they share commercial, cultural and social exchanges that serve the interests of the two countries' brotherly peoples, the ministry added.

It urged the Libyan government to allow the returning of the consulate to perform its normal role.

According to the statement, the Libyan envoy expressed regret over the closure of the Sudanese consulate in Kufra, and promise to convey Sudan's protest to the Libyan government.

On Wednesday, Libya's interim government led by Abdullah al-Thani decided to close Sudan's consulate in Kufra and ordered the mission to leave Libya within 72 hours.

The Sudanese consulate in Kufra is composed of a consul and 11 staffers.
