BEIRUT, July 26 (Xinhua) -- A top UN relief official in Lebanon said on Wednesday that the United Nations is committed to deliver assistance and protection for the Palestinian refugees in the country.
Claudio Cordone, director of the United Nations Relief and Work Agency (UNRWA), made the remarks during his visit to the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain el-Hilweh, the UNRWA said in a statement.
Cordone, accompanied by Sigrid Kaag, the United Nations special coordinator for Lebanon, met with representatives of the camp, including women and youth groups.
"UNRWA is committed to deliver its assistance and protection for Palestinian refugees to the best of its ability, in particular by assisting the families most in need due to poverty and displacement by the recent fighting," Cordone said.
On the difficult life conditions in the camps and recurring outbreaks of violence, the two UN officials pointed to the calm and stability the residents need to lead their lives without fear of violence.
"The important message of this visit is complete and continued support for the Palestinian refugees under the aegis of UNRWA while they are residing in Lebanon," Kaag said.
Kaag and Cordone hailed the cooperation between the Palestinian security forces and the Lebanese military and security agencies to improve the security in the camp.
More than 57,000 Palestinian refugees are registered by UNRWA as living in Ain el-Hilweh.
