DAMASCUS, July 23 (Xinhua) -- The al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front took over Idlib city in northern Syria on Sunday, following infighting with a Turkey-backed rival militant group, pan-Arab al-Mayadeen TV reported.
The Nusra Front, or the Front for Liberating the Levant, took over Idlib after battles with the Ahrar al-Sham movement, said the report.
Infighting between the two groups has recently flared in Idlib, with both vying for dominance in the city, which is largely under Nusra's control after Ahrar al-Sham's reported withdrawal from the city.
The Nusra Front is designated as a terror group by the international community and the UN, and was excluded from any deal along with the Islamic State group.
The battles against Nusra have pushed several rebel groups previously allied with it to withdraw amid reports that Ahrar al-Sham has joined the alliance with the Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army.
