LUSAKA, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Globalization will leaves the poor behind unless the United Nations (UN) implements its development goals in a way that benefits landlocked countries, a Zambian official said Wednesday.

The UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development is aimed at eradicating poverty. The goals can be achieved only if the fundamental principle of "not leaving everyone behind" is translated into action at the global, regional and national level, said Zambia's Minister of National Development and Planning Lucky Mulusa.

The Zambian minister, a representative for LandLocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) at a UN forum in New York, said economic growth in LLDCs has not yet eradicated poverty and citizens benefit little from their economic growth.

Developing landlocked countries, he said, continue to face many development challenges related to their inherent problems like unfavorable locations.

"Why does economic growth in Landlocked Developing Countries fail to eradicate poverty? Why has globalization made rich nations richer and poor countries poorer? We know the answers but we fail to act," he said, according to a statement released by the Permanent Mission of Zambia to the UN.

Zambia is the current chair of the LLDCs.

According to the Zambian minister, inclusive economic growth requires sustainable industrialization, innovation and resilient infrastructure.

The development agenda of LLDCs prioritizes eradicating poverty and achieving socio-economic prosperity, he added.
