KATHMANDU, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Nepali President Bidhya Devi Bhandari appointed Gopal Parajuli as the new chief justice of the country on Monday.
The president appointed Parajuli, 64, as the new chief justice on the recommendation of the Constitutional Council.
The oath-taking ceremony was held at Sheetalnibas, the presidential palace, on Monday. Subsequently, Parajuli assumed his office at the Supreme Court in the Capital.
Parajuli has replaced Sushila Karki who had faced impeachment motion last May at the Parliament by the governing parties accusing her of bias and interfering with executive powers.
However, the ruling parties were forced to withdraw the impeachment motion against Karki after the apex court ordered the Parliament and ruling parties to immediately reinstate her.
Reinstated Chief Justice Karki, who was the Himalayan country's first female chief justice, was retired from the service on June 6.
Newly appointed Chief Justice Parajuli is a senior-most justice of Nepal who joined judicial service in 1979. Parajuli is the 26th Chief Justice in Nepal's Judiciary.
