NEW DELHI, July 12 (Xinhua) -- At least four people were killed and several others injured after a bridge in India's northeastern state of Nagaland collapsed, officials said Wednesday.
The bridge over Dhansiri river collapsed in Dimapur city, about 60 km west of Kohima, the capital city of Nagaland.
"Yesterday one of the oldest iron bridges near Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research Centre over Dhansiri river collapsed here," an official posted in Dimapur said. "Four people including a minor were killed and several others injured in the incident."
The bridge collapse resulted in submerging of many vehicles in water besides leaving few others stranded on the damaged bridge.
"Five vehicles are struck in the debris," the official said. "Police and disaster management personnel have reached the spot, but rescue operations are being affected due to strong currents of the stream."
Local officials said they had stopped plying of heavy vehicles on the bridge in 2015, but were allowing light vehicles through it.
Officials said they have ordered an inquiry into bridge collapse and circumstances leading to loss of lives in it.
