DAR ES SALAAM, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian police said on Thursday they killed two more assailants suspected to be behind the spate of killings in Coast region, bringing to six the number of attackers killed by the police.

Liberatus Sabas, chief of special police operations, said the assailants were killed on Wednesday at 10 p.m. after they were shot in a forest at Ikwiriri.

"They died of excessive bleeding while they were being rushed to hospital," said Sabas, adding that police also seized a sub-machine gun and a shotgun from the assailants.

Last week, Tanzanian police said they killed four assailants during a four-hour fire exchange.

On Wednesday, Tanzanian police chief Simon Sirro revealed that foreign hands were behind the spate of killings in the East African nation's Coast region.

At least 40 people, including local leaders and police officers, have been killed by assailants in Kibiti, Mkuranga and Rufiji districts in Coast region since about two years ago, sending shockwaves among residents in the area.

Tanzanian President John Magufuli said recently that the ongoing insecurity in the Coast region could erode investors' confidence and stall the industrialization drive.
