S. African stocks close firmer Wednesday

JOHANNESBURG, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) closed firmer on Wednesday, with resources gaining on a relatively weaker rand.

The all share was 0.84 higher at 52,483.9 points and the blue-chip top 40 added 0.92 percent. Resources rose 1.24 percent, and gold mining added 2.44 percent. Banks declined 0.24 percent.

Among the global miners Glencore lifted 2.74 percent to R53.32, BHP added 1.43 percent to R213.5. African Rainbow Minerals rose 1.06 percent to R85.2.

Kumba Iron Ore rose 1.41 percent to R173.62 and ArcelorMittal SA declined 4.26 percent to R5.17.

Among gold stocks, Sibanye rose 2.97 percent to R15.6.

Lonmin gained 3.24 percent to R11.80 in the platinum sector. Impala Platinum rose 2.71 percent to R37.85.

Naspers rebounded 1.68 percent to R2,529.72.

Anglo American traded 023 percent higher at R183.49, an almost 15-percent gain over the previous seven days.

Sasol added 0.56 percent to R376.6.

Barclays Africa traded 0.44 percent lower at R143.78 and FirstRand lost 0.31 percent to R48.2. Banking shares have been drifting lower and Barclays Africa is now almost 15 percent lower than six months ago.

Standard Bank traded 0.41 percent higher at R146.65. Enditem
