MADRID, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Over a dozen people have been arrested and nearly 1,000kg of drugs seized in the Catalan region in northeast Spain in an operation against the Neapolitan gang group Camorra, the Spanish Interior Ministry said Wednesday.

The majority of the arrests were made in the city of Barcelona and most of those arrested are Italians, except for a Spaniard, a Chilean and a Colombian national, the regional prosecutor said.

The arrests were carried out by the Catalan police and the Civil Guard as part of an international operation coordinated by Europol, which also carried out arrests in Italy and Germany.

Police also seized 520kg of cocaine, over 450kg of hashish and marijuana, and embargoed properties with an estimated value of 5 million euros (about 5.67 million U.S. dollars) during the operation.

Those arrested face a variety of charges such as belonging to a criminal organization, money laundering and drug trafficking in various European countries.

Authorities believe the money raised through drug trafficking was then laundered through a series of restaurants and also through the purchase of vehicles and jewelry.
