HANOI, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam will, in late March 2018, inaugurate its first private airport capable of serving international flights in northern Quang Ninh province.

Capitalized at nearly 332 million U.S. dollars in Van Don district, Van Don airport is designed to function as a domestic airport capable of handling international flights, its investor, local property developer Sungroup, said on Wednesday.

The airport, which can annually serve 2 million passengers by 2020, and 5 million by 2030, is expected to serve 400,000-500,000 passengers in the first year of operation.

Vietnam is pouring some 268 million U.S. dollars into upgrading its major airports this year, state-owned Airports Corporation of Vietnam said.

The country's aviation industry transported 21.2 million passengers in the first half of this year, up 10 percent from the same period last year.
