NAIROBI, June 30 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's overall monthly inflation declined to 9.21 percent in June from a five-year high of 11.7 percent in May driven by significant falls in several food items, the statistics bureau said on Friday.
The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) said the Consumer Price Index (CPI) computed using the geometric mean approach increased by 1.2 percent from 187.44 in May to 185.39 in June.
The bureau said between March and April, Food and Non-Alcoholic Drinks' Index decreased by 2.74 percent compared to a rise of 3.55 percent witnessed between March and April.
"This is mainly due to significant falls in the prices of several food items. The year on year food inflation dropped from 21.52 percent recorded in May to 15.81 percent in June," the bureau said in a statement issued in Nairobi.
According to bureau, prices of most non-food items remained relatively stable as year on year rates of inflation for all non-food goods and services were much lower than those of food and non-alcoholic beverage.
The Transport Index decreased by 0.06 percent on account of decrease in the pump prices of petrol and diesel.
The prices were obtained from selected retail outlets in 25 data collection zones located in Nairobi and 13 other urban centres. Enditem
