SOFIA, June 26 (Xinhua) -- The fight against terrorism requires pooling efforts and implementing a comprehensive approach, Bulgaria's Vice President Iliyana Yotova said in Varna on Monday.

European leaders cannot guarantee the safety of Europe only by strengthening internal security measures, Yotova said while addressing the 4th International Workshop on Counter-terrorism.

The real solution could be achieved through the implementation of adequate and complex measures, said Yotova, according to her press office.

Closer cooperation and exchange of information between the European Union (EU) member states and Europol as well as more effective coordination on a European and global scale were among the measures to address the risks, Yotova said.

"EU-NATO cooperation needs to be deepened as well as EU cooperation with third countries," said Yotova, who was a member of the European parliament from 2007 to 2016.

Moreover, dealing with terrorism should include not only the fight against its consequences, Yotova said. "We should also focus on the causes of terrorism," she added.

In her words, education should play a leading role in overcoming the root causes of terrorism. "We must take the weapon from the hands of young people and replace it with the knowledge," Yotova said.

Experts from five countries including Israel, Russia, Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria participate in the two-day workshop, organized by the Medical University - Varna.
