BUJUMBURA, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Rwandan authorities have handed over a Burundian fisherman who they said had been abducted on Wednesday by Rwandan soldiers at a border post, a Burundian police spokesman said Friday.

"Jackson Ndayikengurukiye, the Burundian fisherman who had been abducted by Rwandan soldiers, has been released and handed over to Burundian authorities as an expelled immigrant," Burundian Police Spokesman Pierre Nkurikiye said.

Burundian police on Wednesday accused Rwandan soldiers of abducting the fisherman who ran away Rwanda territory after Rwandan soldiers shot five bullets.

In recent months, over six Burundian nationals were killed by Rwandan soldiers after the Rwandan army accused them of illicitly entering the Rwandan territory from Burundi's Cibitoke and Kirundo provinces.

Relations between Burundi and Rwanda have deteriorated after Burundi accused Rwanda of hosting and supporting perpetrators of the 2015 coup plot against Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza.
