TIRANA, June 13 (Xinhua) -- European Union (EU) member states embassies and the EU Delegation in Tirana Tuesday called on all relevant authorities here to adhere to their full commitment to the implementation of the justice reform.
Through a joint press statement, the EU recalled Albanian politics that the implementation of the justice reform was essential for opening negotiations for its accession to EU.
"The EU recalls that credible and tangible progress on all five key priorities, the implementation of justice reform, and in particular the vetting, are essential for the opening of accession negotiations with Albania," read the statement.
Albanian parliament unanimously approved a justice system reform in July 2016 to ensure that judges and prosecutors are independent from politics and to eradicate bribery.
One of the most important laws is that of vetting, which will "scan" around 800 judges and prosecutors as part of Albania's justice reform.
"Vetting of judges and prosecutors, as envisaged in the legislation that has already been reviewed both by the Venice Commission and the Constitutional Court of Albania, needs to start," it said.
But implementation of the reform has been delayed after two judges' associations have sent three laws of justice reform package to the Constitutional Court, which will convene on July 22 to rule its verdict.
