ALGIERS, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika held Thursday a phone call with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron to discuss security situation in Libya and Mali, President Office said in a statement on Friday.

The two leaders "vowed their commitment and determination to boost security cooperation, in a bid to chase away terrorism from the Sahel region," said the statement.

Bouteflika and Macron also discussed bilateral cooperation and agreed to work further to develop it, the statement added.

Macron will pay a state visit to Algeria in the next few weeks, it said, without giving a specific date.

Algeria and France, which exchange intelligence information over terrorist groups active in the Sahel region, hold regular meetings as part of their security cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

Macron visited Algeria on Feb. 13, as part of his election campaign.
