ISTANBUL, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Leaders of religious groups and chiefs or representatives of foreign missions in Istanbul joined thousands of Turks on Thursday for a Ramadan dinner in the city's popular Taksim Square.
The dinner was hosted by the Beyoglu district municipality with a view to creating a sense of brotherhood and friendship among different cultures and religions during the Muslim's holy month of Ramadan.
"It is very important that all segments of society can find the chance to get united at the Ramadan dinner tables at a time when we need peace the most," said Ahmet Misbah Demircan, the district's mayor.
Beyoglu has been serving foods every day for 5,000 people in Taksim for the fasting break that starts at sunset during the month-long Ramadan.
