NEW YORK, June 7 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks opened higher on Wednesday, as investors awaited major political and economic events slated for Thursday.

Former U.S. FBI Director James Comey is scheduled to testify before the Congress Thursday, the first time since U.S. President Donald Trump suddenly fired him.

Comey is expected to testify whether Trump asked him to shut down the FBI probe into former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who resigned after revelations of his inappropriate connections with a Russian diplomat

However, Comey will almost certainly not be able to discuss details of the ongoing FBI probe, which is now overseen by a special counsel, according to local media reports.

Overseas, investors also prepared for a general election in Britain set for Thursday.

Meanwhile, the European Central Bank will release its latest monetary policy decision on Thursday, while market widely expected the central bank to leave interest rates unchanged.

Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 30.54 points, or 0.14 percent, to 21,166.77. The S&P 500 rose 3.89 points, or 0.16 percent, to 2,433.22. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 19.84 points, or 0.32 percent, to 6,294.90. Enditem
