BUJUMBURA, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza on Monday urged Burundian business people to invest in transforming local food products.

The president made the call while harvesting coffee in his plantation in Ngozi, 125 km north of the Burundian capital Bujumbura.

"We have noticed with satisfaction that the agricultural production will be good countrywide during this farming season that we are ending this month. That is why we call on Burundian business people to invest in the transformation of local food products so that they remain in good conditions for their consumption," the president said.

"We also encourage them to export transformed food products ... We also call for a good management of the agricultural production," he said.

He also encouraged civil servants to do farming activities and emphasized that agriculture is the main income-generating activity in the East African nation.

Over 90 percent of Burundian citizens live on farming activities.
