HOUSTON, June 1 (Xinhua) -- The half-year long Atlantic hurricane season in 2017 officially starts on Thursday and it is forecast to be more active than historical averages.
According to the figures released by the National Hurricane Center, the long-term averages for the number of named storms, hurricanes, and major hurricanes in this season are 12, 6, and 3 respectively.
Hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30. Around 85 percent of the action occurs in August, September and October. Historic figure shows the Texas Gulf Coast is at its most vulnerable between mid-July and mid-September.
This year, activity began early, with the formation of Tropical Storm Arlene on April 19, more than a month before the official start of the season.
Hurricane winds can cause storm surges and tornados. The heavy rains associated with hurricanes can not only threaten coastal areas, but areas hundreds of kilometers inland. In some cases, flooding can occur days after a hurricane hits shore.
On Aug. 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina caused major damage to the Mexico Gulf Coast from Texas to Florida, and nearly 2,000 people died. Enditem
