BERLIN, May 30 (Xinhua) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday reiterated the need for Europe to take more proactive role in international politics.
"Europe must be an actor, who also gets involved internationally," Merkel said during a press conference following Indo-German talks in Berlin.
The meeting was interpreted by some local media as a way for the German government to broaden ties beyond traditional western allies such as the United States and Britain.
Her guest, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, echoed her by saying India and Germany will strengthen trade, investment and strategic relations, and further "shape the global order."
Merkel made it clear that their meeting was not a gesture "against the transatlantic relations that are historically of great important."
World media have been keen on Merkel's recent Europe-centered remarks, after her Sunday "beer-tent speech" when Merkel cast doubts on Europe's alignment with the United States and Britain.
Merkel, during a campaign in Germany's southern state of Bavaria, said following the election of the U.S President Donald Trump and Brexit, Europeans "really have to take destiny into their own hands."
Spiegel Online, an influential German news hub, earlier dubbed the her words as "a trans-Atlantic turning point," saying her speech aimed at distancing Germany from the U.S government led by Trump.
