MADRID, May 28 (Xinhua) -- King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain on Saturday oversaw a military parade in the Spanish city of Guadalajara to mark Spanish Armed Forces Day.

During the parade consisting of 2,500 military personnel from all branches of the armed forces, the king and queen saluted the families of the soldiers who had lost their lives on duty in peacekeeping operations around the world.

A total of 160 vehicles, including tanks, also took part in the parade along with 63 aircraft and helicopters, which returned to the display after budget cuts had limited their presence in recent editions.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Defense Maria Dolores de Cospedal, who was present along with Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido, highlighted the important role of the armed forces.

"We live in a country where there is security and peace which allows us to defend our rights and our armed forces work for that. A good defense and good security and the ability to live together in peace are vital for us to enjoy our rights," she said in an interview with Spanish state TV network, RTVE.
