FRANKFURT, May 26 (Xinhua) -- German special police forces arrested a suspected Islamic extremist Thursday evening in the city of Essen in North Rhine-Westphalia, according to a press release by the local police on its website.

The 32-year-old male suspect who was due to be arraigned on Friday might have planned an attack, although there was no indication for specific danger of an attack so far, said the police.

Moreover, the man with German nationality had converted to Islam and behaved actively in the Salafist scene, drawing the attention of the police particularly due to several criminal offenses.
