BRUSSELS, May 25 (Xinhua) -- NATO leaders will make decisions on the fight against terrorism and burden sharing at their meeting later on the day, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said here on Thursday.
Addressing reporters ahead of the meeting, Stoltenberg announced two major items on agenda: stepping up NATO's role in the fight against terrorism and fairer burden sharing in the alliance.
"Today, we will decide to expand our support to the global coalition to counter the Islamic State (IS)," Stoltenberg said.
"This will send a strong political message of NATO's commitment to the fight against terrorism. But it does not mean that NATO will engage in combat operations," he added.
On another major topic of fairer burden sharing, Stoltenberg said NATO allies will take steps to keep up the momentum and live up to the commitment of moving towards investing 2 percent of GDP on defense by 2024.
NATO leaders from 28 allied countries, including U.S. President Donald Trump, are gathering here in Brussels for an important meeting at NATO's new headquarters.
