ANKARA, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to become the chairman of the ruling Justice and Development Party at its extraordinary congress on Sunday in Ankara.

In public opinion, Erdogan will return to the party he found and take the chairman position, after left it in August 2014.

Supporters from across the country are meeting in the arena, waving flags to praise Erdogan and the AKP. Banners read "the leader of change, the nation's leader."

At the congress, the party delegates will also elect the boards' members, namely the Central Decision and Executive Board, Central Disciplinary Board, Intra-Party Democracy and Arbitration Board, and Political Virtue and Ethics Board.

Last month, Turkey passed constitutional amendments by referendum that considerably expands the powers of Erdogan.

Before that, Turkish president is not allowed to be a member of any political party, due to the constitutional requirement for presidents to be politically neutral.
