PUL-E-KHUMRI, Afghanistan, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Afghan forces after killing 12 militants have foiled Taliban attempts to overrun Burka district in the northern Baghlan province on Friday, provincial police spokesman Zabihullah Shuja said.
"Taliban rebels launched a major offensive to capture Burka district early today but their spiteful designs have been foiled and the militants after suffering casualties and leaving 12 bodies behind fled away," Shuja told reporters here.
He also asserted that 15 more insurgents and two security personnel had been injured in fighting for the control of Burka district and the Taliban fighters have run away.
However, locals said that clash is continuing in bazaar of Burka district since early morning.
Taliban militants who are active in parts of Baghlan province with Pul-e-Khumri as its capital 160 km north of Kabul are yet to make comment on the situation in Burka district.
