ABUJA, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Police in Nigeria's southern state of Cross River on Friday said an investigation is underway into the case where more than 30 football fans were electrocuted by a falling power cable while watching a match at a public viewing center late Thursday.
The incident occurred at about 9:30 p.m. in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, while a Europa Football League match between Manchester United and Anderlecht was being televised, a police spokeswoman Irene Ugbo said.
"Some of the people were rushed to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital for treatment," Ugbo told reporters.
Eyewitnesses told Xinhua a power cable from a high tension dropped directly on the crowded public viewing center after a power transformer exploded near it.
More than 50 survivors were rescued by local emergency workers, he added.
