BUCHAREST, April 12 (Xinhua) -- As many as 34 air quality monitoring stations will be installed in the capital of Romania, its mayor Gabriela Firea announced Wednesday.
An operational system for managing the air quality will be functional for the very first time in Bucharest, Firea told a local environment forum, specifying that there will be 25 fixed stations and nine portable ones.
The fixed stations will be placed in areas close to hospitals, schools, also parks and leisure spaces, while the nine portable stations will be located mainly in the area of construction sites, Firea said at investment forum.
"The biggest challenge for Bucharest, at this time, is related to the suffocating swarm, to the pollution which exceeds the European average indicators," said the mayor.
Currently, the air quality in Bucharest is monitored in four stations in urban area and three stations in peripheral zones.
Firea hoped that after the installation of the data broadcast system, pollution levels will be known at any time, making it possible to notice the citizens and alert institutions to take action.
