3 dead, 6 missing in China scaffold collapse

WUHAN, March 28 (Xinhua) -- The collapse of a construction site scaffold in a central China park has left three people dead, while six others remain missing a day after the accident, officials said Tuesday.

Rescuers have been combing the rubble for hours at the park, located in the Wunaoshan area of Macheng City, Hubei Province. By late Tuesday afternoon, nine had been evacuated, but three died of severe injuries. Six are being treated in hospitals, according to the municipal government.

Experts said the rescue efforts were confounded by the debris and distorted structures at the site. Some have sunk into cement slurry that is firming up.

Huang Guoyuan, director of the administration office of the Macheng government, said the rescue will not end until everyone is accounted for.

He also ordered a citywide industrial safety inspection.

Authorities say they have not yet determined the cause of the accident. Eight people in charge of the construction site's safety were being held for police interrogation.
