HANOI, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and the government of the Netherlands on Wednesday co-held a Regional Conference on Food Security in Vietnamese capital Hanoi.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the conference under the theme "Let's get to work. Building a food security future," Vietnamese MARD Deputy Minister Le Quoc Doanh said Vietnam is an agriculture country with nearly 70 percent of its population living in rural areas. The country has managed to earn much from exporting agricultural products including rice, coffee, pepper, cashew nuts, and vegetables among others.
However, the country is among the five nations worldwide hardest hit by climate change. Climate change has affected in numerous regions in Vietnam, the state-run news agency VNA quoted Doanh as saying.
In order to address these challenges, Vietnamese agriculture sector needs restructuring with focus on increasing productivity, quality of agricultural products, response to climate-related risks, and reducing impacts of climate change.
On the two-day event, participants will discuss food safety, innovative seafood growing, climate smart agriculture, and food loss (post-harvest focus).
