U.S. Navy commander arrives in Nepal for three-day visit

KATHMANDU, March 19 (Xinhua) --The U.S. Pacific Command Admiral Harry B. Harris Jr. arrived in Kathmandu on Sunday for a three-day visit.

Admiral Harris will attend the Multinational Peacekeeping Exercise "Shanti Prayas-III", which is going to be jointly organized by the Nepalese Army and the U.S. Pacific Command at Birendra Peace Operations Training Centre in Panchkhal of Kavre District of Nepal from March 20 to April 3.

The Multinational Peacekeeping Exercise "Shanti Prayas-III", with the participants from 28 countries, is aimed at enhancing peacekeeping capabilities, Directorate of the Public Relations of the Nepalese Army said in a press release.

He is scheduled to meet Nepalese Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Foreign Minister Prakash Sharan Mahat and Defense Minister Balkrishna Khand among other high-ranking officials to discuss U.S.-Nepal defense cooperation, according to the Nepalese Defense Ministry.

The top US military officer was welcomed by Lieutenant General of the Nepalese Army Purna Chandra Thapa at the Tribhuvan International Airport earlier in the day.
