NAIROBI, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan authorities said on Tuesday that they have intercepted heroin worth about 1,000 U.S. dollars at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi.
Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) said the consignment was detected as it went through the non-intrusive scanners at the airport.
"The heroin was concealed in packages of 10 turtle artifacts each weighing 500 grams," KRA said in a statement, adding that the drugs weighing 5 kilograms were seized last Friday by KRA officers.
Officers involved in the exercise have handed over the consignment to the Kenya Airport Police for further investigations.
"KRA continues to be vigilant on all consignments passing through the country's ports of entry," the statement said.
The revenue authority has in the recent past deployed non-intrusive scanners at ports of entry as it beefs up its efforts in Customs and Border Control.
