Deported Mexican migrant left behind 3 orphans after committing suicide

Source: Xinhua   2017-02-23 13:49:33

MEXICO CITY, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- A Mexican migrant who killed himself by jumping off a border bridge shortly after being deported was a widowed father of three, local media reported on Wednesday.

Guadalupe Olivas Valencia died of his injuries on Tuesday after jumping off the first roadway bridge he came across when entering Tijuana from the San Ysidro border crossing point in San Diego, California.

Witnesses said they saw a distraught man yelling not wanting to be back in Mexico before jumping to his death.

Immigration records show Olivas, 45, had been deported twice before, in 2015 and 2016, respectively.

Alvaro Ruelas Echave, mayor of Ahome, Olivas' hometown in northern Sinaloa state, told a press conference that the city has assisted Olivas' relatives in traveling to Tijuana to claim his body.

Olivas' children were living with his family members while he worked in the United States as a gardener.

His aunt Irma Delgado Rios, who was also at the press conference, said deported migrants should receive psychological counseling.

Olivas' death "should sound an alarm for other Mexicans who, with the hope of helping their families, left for achieving the American dream," she said.

U.S. President Donald Trump's crackdown on undocumented migrants can potentially lead to the deportation of millions of Mexicans and other Latin Americans in the coming months.
