NEW DELHI, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- India's northeastern state of Nagaland Wednesday got a new chief as Shurhozelie Liezitsu, a veteran politician was sworn in as the 17th Chief Minister.
"Today 81-year old Naga People's Front party President was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor P B Acharya at a ceremony in Kohima," an official said.
Liezitsu succeeded T R Zeliang, who resigned as Chief Minister following widespread protests over reservation to women in local body elections.
Liezitsu emerged as the unanimous choice for the top post and formally staked his claim, reports said. Subsequently he was invited by the governor to form a new government on Monday.
Earlier this month situation in the state deteriorated after two youth were allegedly killed in police firing on protesters. The protesters set ablaze several government offices.
However, following the resignation of Zeliang, the agitating groups called off its statewide protests and shutdown.
An armed insurgency has been going on in Nagaland for more than 60 years with rebels fighting government troops for an independent homeland.
