MEXICO CITY, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- The United States and Mexico have agreed to strengthen dialogue on financial and fiscal matters, the Mexican Economy Ministry said on Tuesday.
The news came after Economy Minister Jose Antonio Meade and the new U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin spoke via phone earlier in the day.
"During the conversation, both pledged to increase bilateral dialogue and promote greater cooperation," the ministry said in a statement.
The two also agreed on "the importance of Mexico-U.S. ties in all areas."
In coming months, Mexico and the U.S. are to begin renegotiating the two-decade North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which the Trump administration says has unfairly benefited Mexico by sending U.S. jobs south of the border.
Washington also wants to apply a tax on imported Mexican goods, or remittances sent by Mexicans working in the U.S., to pay for a wall along their shared border.
